A Frontier Airlines flight 4345 bound for Los Angeles turned into a chaotic emergency at Denver International Airport after the aircraft struck and killed a person who had breached the airfield late Friday night, triggering smoke inside the cabin, a brief engine fire and an emergency evacuation on the runway.
Authorities said the individual climbed over a perimeter fence and reached the active runway moments before being hit by the Airbus A321 during takeoff. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the person deliberately entered the restricted area and was struck while the aircraft was travelling at high speed.
Emergency Evacuation After Smoke Fills Cabin
The incident forced pilots to abort takeoff after reporting an engine fire warning and smoke spreading through the cabin. Emergency crews responded immediately as passengers evacuated using emergency slides onto the runway before being transported back to the terminal by bus.
Airport CEO Phil Washington called the incident a “preventable tragedy”, said, “As this is an active investigation with numerous other agencies involved, it is going to take some time as we are still confirming what information we can share at this time.”
“This was a horrible and preventable tragedy that has affected many due to the actions of one person who apparently trespassed at an airport and lost their life as a result.
“Safety is paramount in everything we do in aviation and at DEN we want to make sure we have all the facts before information is released.”
NTSB Reviews Passenger Evacuation Response
While airport officials initially described the injuries as minor, the Denver airport emergency evacuation itself is now drawing scrutiny from investigators. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said it is reviewing whether the evacuation met the threshold for a formal safety investigation after passengers reported remaining onboard for several minutes while smoke filled the aircraft.
Videos circulating online also appeared to show several travellers evacuating with carry-on luggage, a recurring concern flagged by the NTSB in previous airline emergencies because it can slow evacuation efforts and increase risks during fires or smoke events.
Passengers described scenes of panic after hearing a loud impact followed by sparks and smoke inside the cabin. Some said the aircraft appeared to lift slightly before suddenly stopping on the runway.
Runway Safety Concerns Intensify After Recent Incidents
The aircraft carried 224 passengers and 7 crew members. 12 passengers suffered minor injuries and five were taken to hospital for evaluation. Investigators continue examining how the person accessed the runway and whether additional airport security measures may be required.
The Denver tragedy comes amid growing concerns over runway safety following the recent Air Canada Flight 8646 collision at LaGuardia, where investigators examined possible coordination failures between ground crews and air traffic control.
