‘We could not have asked for a better result’: mayor-elect in the Sault
Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Matthew Shoemaker says his message around economic recovery and resilience after American tariffs on steel resonated with voters.
Roaring applause at Matthew Shoemaker’s election night gathering let the incumbent mayor know he would be returning to the city’s top job.
Dozens of his raucous supporters surrounded Shoemaker inside Sportscenter Bar and Grill when the final polls confirmed his victory.
“We could not have asked for a better result — up from four years ago,” he told supporters.
“Positivity — and not negativity — won the day.”
Shoemaker said the win marks a mandate for the city “not to be small-minded” and to consider every opportunity.
Shoemaker congratulated councillors and school board trustees who were elected tonight, as well as his competitors on their campaigns.
Speaking alongside his two sons, Hudson and Max, Shoemaker vowed to ensure kids like his own will love the city they grow up in.
“It is their generation that will inherit the city that we build in this coming term,” he said. “I will do everything I can to leave it in the best shape for them in the future. I love you boys.”
