The pool deck is often where a cruise starts to feel like a vacation. That’s where most action happens. Holland America Line is leaning into that with new dedicated bandstands coming to the Lido Pool on two of its ships, giving live music a proper home in one of the busiest spots on board.
What’s changing at the pool deck
Oosterdam and Zuiderdam are getting new bandstands built directly into the Lido Pool area. Instead of a stage wheeled in for special occasions, this is a fixed venue designed for daily performances, sailaway parties, and the kind of evening entertainment that used to be scattered across the ship. It’s all in one place now.
Expect a mix of solo musicians and full live bands throughout the cruise, along with programming tied to Holland America’s long-running Orange Party tradition. It’s a guest favourite that regularly turns the pool deck into the liveliest spot on the ship.
Because the Lido Pool sits under a retractable glass roof, the venue stays usable even when the weather chooses to play spoilsport—no more worries of a rainy sea day.
Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line, said the bandstands reflect what guests have been asking for. “Evolution is about bringing the very best of Holland America Line to more of our fleet,” she said, describing it as part of a broader push to expand entertainment across the fleet.
Part of a $500 million fleet transformation
This update is one piece of Holland America Evolution, a fleet-wide investment topping $500 million across six Vista and Signature Class ships. Oosterdam and Zuiderdam are first in line, and both are getting more than the bandstand.
Guests can also expect the Grand Dutch Café, a favourite from the line’s newer ships, plus new staterooms and suites added during the refurbishment.
Why is this big? Holland America is calling this its largest fleet update in 153 years, which puts the investment in perspective.
The goal seems less about a single flashy feature and more about narrowing the gap between the newer Pinnacle Class ships and the rest of the fleet.
When can you sail it?
Oosterdam’s transformation is scheduled for fall 2027, with the new bandstand debuting once that refit is complete. Zuiderdam follows in the program as the second ship to receive the Evolution treatment, though a specific date for her bandstand debut has not been released yet.
Bookings are already open for both ships’ post-refurbishment sailings, so travellers wanting to experience the new venues, staterooms and dining firsthand can start planning now.
Worth knowing before you book
If live music and a strong pool deck scene matter to your cruise experience, sailings after each ship’s Evolution refit are worth prioritising over earlier departures on the same vessels.
